SHANGHAI DOG - Clanging Bell EP (1983)

Even though this Vancouver band was made up of ex-members of The Subhumans and Young Canadians, I've never actually listened to them until recently. They don't sound much like their previous bands, going more for a post-punk sound here, but this 12" is still pretty good. My favorite song is 'The Closet', which kind of reminds me a bit of Nomeansno, but not really. If that makes any sense.

SUBHUMANS - No Wishes, No Prayers LP (1983)

Like the last post, here's another great record that will never be reissued, unfortunately. I read in an interview with The Subhumans that the master tapes are long lost, but they do have three quarters of the songs in demo form. Maybe they should release them, it would be better than nothing. Unless they plan on re-recording this album, like they did with 'Same Thoughts Different Day'. In that same interview, Brian Goble claims that this record was slightly sped up, because they didn't play that fast when they recorded it. Maybe it was to appeal to the hardcore kids at the time? Who knows.

NECROS - IQ32 & Live 1981 LP (2012)

Since I won't get to see Negative Approach tonight, due to OFF! canceling their west coast tour, I thought I'd post some other great Midwest hardcore. I wasn't about to spend an arm and a leg for the original IQ 32 EP, and it won't be getting reissued anytime soon, so this bootleg 12" will have to suffice. Whoever put this out did an amazing job, this sounds as good as the original. On the flip side is a live soundboard recording from Obanion's in Chicago, Aug 3rd 1981. The sound quality is also quite good, the only drawback is that the drums cut out during the third song and are pretty much non-existent for the rest of the set. Still, I would've killed to have been at this show!

VA - Bud Luxford Presents: On Sale Inside LP (1981)

I finally broke down and bought this after seeing it in local record stores for many years. This was the second Bud Luxford compilation of fuck bands, made up of members of more "serious" acts such as the Pointed Sticks and Subhumans (to name a few). At the end of this record Bud says, "I know you enjoyed listening to this album and I hope you buy the third one when it comes out." Only I don't think they made a third one.

VA - Zulu Records Sampler tape (1986)

I bought this tape of local acts for like a buck at the record fair years back mainly because it had a live Death Sentence song on it. (The same one from the Shindig! LP, which I didn't have at the time.) A lot of these bands/songs later appeared on the double CD, "Last Call: Vancouver Independent Music 1977-1988". That comp has been out of print for a long time, but they still had a few copies at Zulu Records last time I was there.

POINTED STICKS - Live Radio Broadcast (1980)

I was going through a box of CD-Rs last night when I came across some Pointed Sticks bootlegs I had completely forgot about. They were given to me by an online friend from the States back in the mid-00's. As far as I know, they've never been officially released so I guess it's fair game. First up is a smokin' live set at Gary Taylor's Rock Room from 1980. Not sure exactly when, but it was after their return from the UK. It was recorded for radio, hence the great sound quality. More rare Sticks to come, stay tuned!
