It only took 23 years but someone finally put out another Killed By Hardcore comp. Was it done by the same peeps who did the others? Who knows and quite frankly, who cares? When I first saw this online I thought, "Wait... was there a volume four?!" But I'm assuming that would be Killed By Finnish Hardcore which might be why there's no Finnish hardcore on here.
In the days where seemingly everything's been reissued or at least on YouTube, I was actually surprised to discover some bands that I'd never heard before. Anyways, today's the 15th anniversary of this little music blog so here's my gift to you, CHEERS!!
Power-pop-punk-indie-rock from Vancouver made up of ex-members of PINK STEEL and THE WARDELLS. I used to see their CD's in every local record store and pawn shop back in the 90's. I was only familiar with their standout cut, "Hockey Sucks" from the "Johnny Hanson Presents... Puck Rock Vol. 1" comp before buying this tape for $3 last week.
Looking at this corny artwork you're probably thinking this a rockabilly compilation from the 90's or 2000's. But it's actually a collection of rare 80's punk rock and hardcore from Oakville Ontario, a town between Hamilton and Toronto. Of course you'd never know that because there is no information or history on this anywhere, just some tiny low-res photos and Facebook links to some of the bands on the inside cover.
Unfortunately the sound quality matches the layout, especially the NEGATIVE GAIN tracks. It's almost like the files were sourced from Napster circa 1999. Which makes it even funnier considering this CD came out in 2019! But hey, outside of HYPE and the aforementioned NEGATIVE GAIN it's the only place to hear the other three bands so I guess it's better than nothing?
Much like their current incarnation, this 45 single is Doug And The Slugs minus Doug Bennett. Bassist Steve Bosley handles lead vocals and does an alright job here I guess. The A side is kind of a catchy little number backed up with a Police-influenced reggae tune on the flip side. Strictly for the Slugs completists (if there is such a thing).
You may remember this band's sole vinyl platter I posted back in the fall of 2018. Welllll... after seven and a half years of searching, I finally tracked down another release by them! HUZZAH!!!

"AKA formed in late '78 or early '79 and lasted until early 1981. Fronted by singer/saxophonist Dennis Mills, they released the Red Therapy 12-inch EP in 1980, and played in Seattle and San Francisco. In 1981, core bandmembers formed Rhythm Mission, who existed until 1989; their career overlapped with the Jazzmanian Devils, featuring Mills and company supporting various guest vocalists (including Vanessa Richards of Bolero Lava, and Madeline Morris of Moev and Family Plot)."
"After seeing the Furies at Japanese Hall, Tim Ray and Bill Napier-Hemy set about forming a band in early 1978. They added drummer Brock Smith and bassist Randy Wright. They called the band AV. Colin Griffiths replaced Brock Smith, and in May they opened for the Patti Smith Group at the Commodore Ballroom. In August 1978, Tim, Bill & Colin recorded the four-song 7-inch AVEP, the inaugural release on the Quintessence Records label. Then Bill & Colin left to concentrate on their new band, the Pointed Sticks. By the time the AVEP was released that fall, Tim Ray had formed a new version of AV, with Martin Brown (bass) and Ronnie Cargill (drums).
In April 1981, Ray recorded Seen A Fight with Payola$ bassist Marty Higgs, Ronnie Cargill, and keyboardists Bill Barclay and Peter Helliwell. (Seen A Fight surfaced on the Zulu Records compilation CD Last Call: Vancouver Independent Music 1977-1988.) In June, Ray (whose band now included Alex Varty of AKA, and Danice MacLeod of UJ3RK5) was the opening act for John Cale on the west coast leg of his tour. In the mid-to-late ‘80s, Tim Ray moved to New York and pursued a visual-arts career. He also was an important figure in the underground “Anti-Folk” movement. Today, Tim Ray lives in Vancouver."
Previously unreleased power-pop/punk from Thunder Bay, Ontario recorded between 1979-80. Track 3 also appeared on the "Punk History Canada" comp the same year.
Bought this tape for $5 at a little shop on Vancouver Island last month. Never heard them before but I was familiar with the name and knew they were from Calgary. This was their second and final release before half the band went on to play in FIELD DAY.
Found this one in California back in October, now my Glory Stompers collection is finally complete. Looks like whoever had this copy before me played the shit out of it so it might not be the cleanest sounding rip out there.
