AV - AVEP (1978)

"After seeing the Furies at Japanese Hall, Tim Ray and Bill Napier-Hemy set about forming a band in early 1978. They added drummer Brock Smith and bassist Randy Wright. They called the band AV. Colin Griffiths replaced Brock Smith, and in May they opened for the Patti Smith Group at the Commodore Ballroom. In August 1978, Tim, Bill & Colin recorded the four-song 7-inch AVEP, the inaugural release on the Quintessence Records label. Then Bill & Colin left to concentrate on their new band, the Pointed Sticks. By the time the AVEP was released that fall, Tim Ray had formed a new version of AV, with Martin Brown (bass) and Ronnie Cargill (drums).

In April 1981, Ray recorded Seen A Fight with Payola$ bassist Marty Higgs, Ronnie Cargill, and keyboardists Bill Barclay and Peter Helliwell. (Seen A Fight surfaced on the Zulu Records compilation CD Last Call: Vancouver Independent Music 1977-1988.) In June, Ray (whose band now included Alex Varty of AKA, and Danice MacLeod of UJ3RK5) was the opening act for John Cale on the west coast leg of his tour. In the mid-to-late ‘80s, Tim Ray moved to New York and pursued a visual-arts career. He also was an important figure in the underground “Anti-Folk” movement. Today, Tim Ray lives in Vancouver."

THE NEGATIVES - S/T CD (2005)

Previously unreleased power-pop/punk from Thunder Bay, Ontario  recorded between 1979-80. Track 3 also appeared on the "Punk History Canada" comp the same year.

VA - No Pedestrians LP (1980)

Power-pop, new wave, punk, rock & roll comp outta Toronto. TYRANNA and ZRO4 are definitely the standouts for me.

Нови Цветя - Cold War Collection LP (2019)

Novy Tsvetya (New Flowers) were one of Bulgaria's first punk rock bands. This LP compiles some of their recordings spanning from 1979 to 1995. Would have been nice if it included some liner notes with a bit of a band history and info on when the songs were actually recorded.

VA - Electrocute Your Cock! Vol. 2 LP (2023)

If you're like me, you dug the shit outta Volume 1 so here's a new collection of old rarities by the same folks. Hope they put out more of these.

BAD BRAINS - Demos And Rare Tracks 1979-1983 LP (2023)

Picked this bootleg up on a recent trip to Seattle. I'm sure most of these versions have been available on the internet forever but a lot of them are new to my ears. Tracks 10-12 and 18-20 are the exact same recordings even though they're listed here as two different recording sessions. Plus I think some of the 1980 demos (tracks 1-7) are just slightly sped up versions of the Black Dots sessions, what do you think?

THE DREAM DATES - Moans On The Phone EP (2005)

These hosers hailed from Hamilton Ontario, the same hometown as Teenage Head and Forgotten Rebels. Although these songs were recorded in 1979, tracks 1-2 weren't released until 2000 and 3-4 in '04 as 7" singles. The title track would've been considered a classic and featured on at least a few Killed By Death / Bloodstains type comps had it come out back then.

THE MISFITS - Studio Outtakes 1978-1979 LP (2023)

Just when you think you've heard every studio cut by Glenn and company, here comes this lost treasure outta nowhere! It's crazy to me that these alternate takes have never seen the light of day in the past forty-four years. Although I can see why they weren't included on the box set as it would've been overkill having like six versions of Who Killed Marilyn. But yeah the sound quality is great, no 2nd or 3rd generation cassette dub here. I'm sure this link will get taken down at some point so get it while it's hot!

VA - Bloodstains Across Northern Ireland LP (1998)

This was a recent blind purchase or as I like to call it, a deaf purchase as I'd never heard any of the bands on this comp before buying it. But hey it's a Bloodstains record, they're always chock full of obscure gems. This'll be right up your alley if you like your punk rock a little more on the glam rock/power pop side.

YOUNG IDENTITIES - S/T EP (1979)

Didn't take long but I was able to score these Aussies' debut platter. Ripped from the 2010 reissue because an original goes for thousands of $$$.

VA - Bloodstains Across Orange County Vol 2 tape (2020)

Come on, you didn't think I was gonna leave y'all hanging and not post Vol II, did ya? I was lucky to score these tapes as they sold out pretty quick and for good reason. BTW, that Der Stab song is actually 'Tracers' not 'Truth Comes Out' if anyone was wondering.

VA - Bloodstains Across Orange County tape (2020)

Let's start 2022 off with a bang. I'm guessing this wasn't put together by the same folks who did the original Bloodstains records due to the fact there's no liner notes and it's on cassette. But it's still an awesome mix of lost and rare jams, so who cares? Why has no one reissued that Saigon record yet?!
