Happy Canaduh day. I posted these guys' debut tape almost five years ago so here's their only other release. "The Mechanic" also appeared on the 2021 compilation, "Diggin' Up The 90's".
Bought this Victoria band's 7" because I recognized them off the "ALL YOUR EARS CAN HEAR" comp. A year before it's release they completed a 6 week cross-country tour to Halifax and back, which was impressive at the time for a band that didn't have a record out. In '87 they were supposed to do another Canadian tour with AGNOSTIC FRONT but Stigma and company couldn't get across the border so they decided to try to do it on their own. The band got as far as Regina before bad luck forced them back home where they split up shortly after.
Experimental hardcore project with improvised vox featuring members of NEOS and JERK WARD. This disc compiles everything they recorded between 1984 and 1986, most of it previously unreleased.
A decade ago today I debuted this blog with a 1984 live set by H.O.C., so it only made sense that I'd post the band's sole vinyl release for my 10 year anniversary. Given to me by their guitarist Neil Embo around 20 years ago. Definitely one of the best punk rock releases to come out of B.C. in the 1980's. Here's to ten more years, CHEERS!
Don't know much about this band except that they hailed from Victoria BC. Two tracks from this tape appeared on the 2000 compilation, "The Street Enters The House". They also released a 7"EP called "Tim & Randy".
Not sure exactly when this one was released as there's no year on it, but based on the label's category number it came out before the band's other tape, 'The Tenth Kid'. So I'm thinking 1991? I personally prefer that tape to this one as the songs are little tighter and it's chock full of movie and TV sound bites. Just sayin'.
Hey remember a few months back when I was given some local 90's demo tapes? Well, you won't believe this... but I was just given a bunch more! And here's the first of that batch. I only previously knew this Victoria band from their contribution to the 1994 comp, 'Fuck The Commonwealth'. They also released another tape, which I also just got and will most likely post next. So hang tight, i-ight?
Here's another sick demo from that pile of tapes I scored last month. Catchy skate punk from Victoria BC, home of the Dayglo Abortions, Neos and Nomeansno. They also released a 7" EP the same year that was produced by Cretin (of Dayglos fame).

Big thanks again to Josh for hooking me up with this House Of Commons demo that I didn't even know existed! I'm not sure when it was released but I know the first two songs were recorded in 1993 by a new version of HOC reformed in tribute to their late frontman Andrew "Android" Challinor. Tracks 3-6 were taken from the band's 1983 MLP 'Patriot' and 7-9 were recorded in '84. Side B features some live songs by The Intoxicators, who's 'Last Call' demo tape was posted here back in 2012.
I recently found this record sealed at a stereo shop in Surrey. Power pop/college rock from Victoria made up of ex-members of Pink Steel and future members of The Sweaters. Produced by Bill Napier-Hemy of The Pointed Sticks.
HUGE thanks to Chris Iller who ran Canadian punk/HC label Fans Of Bad Productions for sending me these long lost demos last week. It was through compilations he put out back in the 90's like "Fuck The Commonwealth" where I first heard this Victoria band. I've always wanted to hear more from them and for years I searched online to no avail. Although it's a shame the Fruits never had a proper release at least they left behind these recordings. It only took me two decades to finally hear them but hey, better late than never eh?

This Canadian comp opened me up to a lot of bands when I bought it back in the mid 90's. I recently found a cheap copy of the vinyl version that has less songs, but also a few that weren't on the CD. I added those as bonus tracks, so consider this the 'Deluxe Edition'. SCTV fans may recognize track 36.

Today marks the 5 year anniversary of this blog so I thought I'd better post something big to mark the occasion. You couldn't ask for a better document of the early underground music scene in British Columbia's capital city. This 2 disc comp came with a book that's full of pics, band bios and anecdotes by people who were involved like Murray Acton (Dayglo Abortions), Jade Blade (Dishrags), John Wright (Nomeansno) and more. A lot of the songs on here are either out of print or previously unreleased, making this their first appearance on CD. I wish Vancouver had a scene comp as great as this. Here's to another five years, CHEERS!

Another live Dayglos set from the Bay Area, this one recorded at the Farm in San Fran, on 10/25/1986. The sound is a bit rougher than the previous one I posted, but I thought it was worth putting up because it features the late Nev The Impaler on guitar. Rest In Peace. Also, Cretin wasn't on this tour so vocal duties were performed by Spud.

Here's a pretty decent soundboard recording taped August 30th, 1987 at Gilman Street Project in Berkeley, CA. The sound is a bit low in the first song, but is fixed (somewhat) by time they start playing "Fuck My Shit Stinks". In case you're wondering, "D+DOD" is actually "Dragons".

What better way to kick off the new year than with some classic local crossover? The only reason I didn't post this ages ago is because there was at least two other blogs that had this split. Seems those links are now dead, so here it is again. Thanks to Dan for the scans, especially Pushead's review from Thrasher magazine.

I know there were cleaner versions of these demos out there, but I figured I'd put this up anyways. This was dubbed for Dave Spicer by a member of Red Tide in the early 90's. Whoever did it even took the time to make liner notes. Track 14 is actually a reprise of 'Fear To Live'. The first 5 songs were from when the Victoria band were still known as Suburban Menace. At the end of side B there was also two and a half songs from "Kelp And Salal", which I left off because you can get those songs on itunes. Still, it's a shame no one's ever done a discography of this totally unique hardcore band.
The Dishrags not only have the distinction of being B.C.'s (and one of Canada's) first all-female punk band, they also played Vancouver's very first punk rock show in July 1977. I believe this CD EP was released to commemorate the 30 year anniversary of that gig. If you already own the 1997 out of print compilation, "Love/Hate", then there's is nothing on this you don't have already. I think this too may be no longer available, outside of a few record stores in Vancouver. Tracks 1 & 2 were from the Vancouver Complication sessions, tracks 3-6 are from their two 7"s and track 7 is live.

Icemen were, I guess you could say a "hard rock" band with a definite punk and metal influence. This was Ken Jensen's(RIP) band between Red Tide and D.O.A., which also had Grog (ex-House Of Commons) on bass. Judging by the professional layout of this cassette and by the fact it was recorded by Cecil English at Profile Studios, these guys were probably hoping to get signed.
